In Praise of Carrie Prejean

This past Sunday was the Miss America Pageant. As a Christian and a married man I did not watch the pagent, as I do not need to see 50 girls parade around in bikinis. However, there I have learned this week of a contreversy during the pageant which involves an important Christian issue that I just had to share my thought on.

Traditionally, the questions the ladies get asked at these pageants are pretty easy, related to world peace or puppies. This year the questions were challenging and politically charged, such as when Miss South Carolina, who won the competition, was asked about big businesses receiving bail out money. One of the judges, an openly gay gossip blogger named Perez Hilton, Asked Carrie Prejean, Miss California, if she thought more states should allow gay marriage. Prejean answered that in her state and in her family, marriage was between one man and one woman, and then even apologized if she offended anyone.

Not only did she end up in second place, but Hilton posted a Vlog blasting Prejean for not being prepared for the question, bringing her religion into the answer, and giving the worst answer in pageant history. This is where I have a problem.

First, Prejean did not appear to be unprepared, as she answered the question immediately, without stumbling or second guessing. She did not say anything about religion, only about the law in her state and the opinion in her family. I think this is one of the best answers she could have given.

I think the real problem here is that Hilton wanted to use his moment in the national TV spotlight to advance the radical homosexual agenda and it backfired right in his face. In his Vlog he said he didn’t want to hear people talking about Jesus (which she never did). Could this be because deep down he knows his chosen lifestyle is wrong, and that he can’t stand up under the heat of the Gospel?

So far this is a good story, but the best is yet to come. In an interview yesterday with Matt Lauer, Prejean was asked if she had a do-over, would she make her answer less non commital to give her a better chance at winning. Prejean said that as a Christian (now she invokes her faith, not then) this was simply not an option, and that she was proud of herself, and she knew a lot of other people who were proud of her too.

She could not be more right. Thousands of messages on Twitter have praised her and her actions, and I would like to add mine here as well. Miss Prejean, in this country millions of  young girls look up to the likes of Britney Spears (does anybody still look up to her?) and Lindsay Lohan with great disapointment. In you we have a role model who not only fits the world’s criteria for beauty, but whose heart knows beauty that is pleasing to the Lord, standing by her convictions and honoring God.

Carrie Prejean I am truly sorry you did not achieve your goal of becoming Miss America, which you clearly deserved. But as you said in your interview with Matt Lauer,  God clearly has another plan for you. I pray that you will continue to honor and speak out for God, and that you will use your celebrity to speak out for His glory. God Bless You.

“…Prejean was asked if she had a do-over, would she make her answer less non commit[t]al…”

Do you or Mr. Lauer have one more negation in that sentence than intended?

Did you mean “would she make her answer MORE non committal…” (Or, to say it another way, “less committal”) ?

I think that is exactly what he was asking her, or alternatively if she would have just gone with something other than her true convictions, which would be a lie. She said she could not do that, implying either one.

    Good for Miss Prejean!

The Way of the Cross Writer Dr. J. Allen Blair

Have you ever gotten lost while traveling in a strange city? Most of us have. The way we were going seemed to be the right way, but it proved to be wrong. Well this happens to people relative to spiritual matters, too.

The apostle Paul declared, God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I am to the world. Paul did not glory in himself, nor in his own exploits. But it was the Cross which was the focus of all his attention. Why? Because the Cross exemplified the death of the Son of God that made possible the great transformation in Paul’s life.

For many people, the Cross is meaningless and useless, but for Paul, it was the heart of the message which he preached. He declared, in 1 Corinthians 1:18, For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God. Without the truth of the Cross, we have no message and no hope. The Cross is man’s only hope. For it is through this message that we are reconciled to God.

Listen to Colossians 1:20. Christ, having made peace through the blood of his cross, by him to reconcile all things unto himself; by him, I say, whether they be things in earth, or things in heaven. Man’s only approach to God is through Jesus Christ. God has planted the Cross of Christ at the crossroads of history. There is no way that anyone can detour around it. This is a fact. As the days pass, the inevitable confronting of everyone with Christ becomes more apparent. From Him there is no escape. It is the reaction to that encounter which determines the disposition and destiny of the individual.

The Cross produced one of the darkest hours in history. But it was not without its meaning. When Jesus was born, the darkness of midnight was turned into the full blaze of midday. But, when He died, the brilliance of midday was plunged into the blackness of midnight. How could it be otherwise when sinful men sought to extinguish the Light of the world? Light rejected brings darkness. But, because Christ endured the darkness, hope was provided for those on their way to outer and eternal darkness. Thus, all who believe on Christ become the children of Light and dwell forever in that celestial land where there shall be no night.

If you would have your soul’s need met, bow in adoration at the feet of the Son of God. There, you will be overwhelmed with the greatness of His love. Turn your thoughts to Calvary . Gaze upon that holy sufferer on the central cross. Contemplate the utter desolation of that Blessed One as He cried out in the thick darkness, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me? Pause there, while in spirit you travel back to Gethsemane where the dread anticipation of Golgotha caused the bloody sweat of soul agony. Now, return to the “place of the skull:” Calvary , where the most solemn transaction in time or eternity took place. There, God the Father abandoned His Son when He (the sinless One), having voluntarily taken our guilt, bore the full weight of judgment due because of it. God made him; that is, Jesus Christ, to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.

Someone has declared that Calvary is God’s infinite heartache manifest in time. Indeed it is. What a price Jesus Christ paid for our sins that we might become the possessors of everlasting life. When Jesus Christ died on the Cross, it was not human nature offering its very best to God; it was God offering His very heart to man. God not only permitted His Son to die on the Cross as a way of salvation, but He proved to the world that it was the way when He raised Him up from the dead and gave Him glory. It was Christ’s resurrection that proved the value of the Cross.

The theologians quibble over the question of “How did sin enter into the world?” Personally, I do not think this is the matter of supreme importance. To me, the greater issue is how to get sin out of the world. God has given us the answer in the message of the Cross. For it is there that Jesus Christ shed His blood that can blot out human sin and guilt and make possible everlasting forgiveness and peace. When a man or woman believes in Jesus Christ, the blood of Jesus Christ God’s Son cleanseth from all sin. The Cross made this possible.

Thus, there is hope for everyone listening to me. No life is too far gone for Jesus Christ. There is forgiveness on the basis repentance and confession. The Bible says, in Romans 10:9, That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.

One time, a clergyman (talking about deathbed conversion) said to a Christian woman, “Do you think that a death-bed repentance does away with a whole life of sin?” “No,” she answered quietly, “but Calvary does.”

The Lord Jesus said, in John 12:32, And I, if I be lifted up from the earth, will draw all men unto me. He was lifted up from the earth on the Cross. The fact that He will draw all men unto Him does not mean that every one will be saved. But it does mean that He provided a way so that everyone can be saved. The Cross provides universal salvation for all who believe on Jesus Christ. It is God’s only way of salvation.

When the Lord Jesus Christ was on this earth, He lived a perfect life. He helped people wherever He went. He healed their bodies, He even raised the dead. But this is not why He came. Luke 19:10 says He came to seek, and to save the lost. It was by means of the Cross that He made this great salvation possible.

When Christ was on the Cross, one of the thieves at His side shouted, If thou be the Christ, save thyself and us! It would have been easy for Christ to comply with this request. It would not have been any problem at all for the Son of God to step down from the Cross and even release the two thieves. But He did not come to save Himself. He came to give Himself a sacrifice for all, that everyone might have an opportunity to be saved. He died for you. But there is more. He is not a dead corpse in a Syrian tomb. He is very much alive today, for He arose from the grave. Soon, He is going to return and rule and reign in the world. But, right now, He has a gift for you: The gift of everlasting life. You can accept it or reject it. With the gift of life, you gain the right to heaven. If you reject it, you have only the right to hell. Friend, will you open your heart to Jesus Christ and say, “Lord, come into my heart. I trust You as my Savior and Lord”?

Father God, You have made it so clear in Your Word that there is no road leading to Heaven other than the way of the Cross. We pray that many who need Christ will recognize their need at this moment and call upon Him for salvation. May they receive that which You have made possible for them through the Cross, for we ask in our Savior’s Name. Amen.

Well, I’m not sure what this had to do with Carrie Prejean, but it was a well written article about Jesus and His act of salvation, so I approved it. If you would like to submit regular articles to this blog, click on my contact link and let me know.

    Prejean-Miss Hypocrite
Carrie Prejean, the Miss California contestant, was correct about homosexuality! It is mortal filth
and condemned by God’s Word…but Prejean poses semi nude and topless EXPOSING HER
BREASTS and revealing the bottom of her buttocks…then lied about it…and then she parades
her body around in the Miss California Pageant EXPOSING HER PARTIAL BREASTS and
buttocks in a sexual immoral swimsuit before the world! She is 100% a HYPOCRITE and
she does NOT represent Jesus Christ nor a Christian!!
Jesus said it this way, “Anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery
with her in his heart. If your right eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better
for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into Hell.” [Mt. 5:28,29]

While I wold agree with you that Prejean’s posing for nude pictures and participating in a pageant seem hypocritical once she has come out in support of true marriage, I have to take issue with your statement that she does not represent Christianity. We have to keep in mind that she is a sinner, and therefore she is going to make mistakes and commit sins. But that does not exclude her from representing the Kingdom or being a part of it.

The harsh reality you have to deal with is that YOU sin. DAILY. Does that mean you are not a Christian? Does that mean you can speak for Christianity? No. It doesn’t mean that. It just means that we have to accept the good with the bad, because in the end we are all bad, but we are saved by grace through faith and receive His justification and righteousness. The probelm is that the non-Christian world does not understand this and therefore does not see how Prejean can be serious or taken seriously.

Also remember that David was called a man after God’s own heart, and yet he was a murderer. Solomon turned to idolatry. Samson succumbed to pride, and Paul persecuted and probably killed Christians. All of these flawed people were used by God and represented the kingdom.

So can Carrie Prejean. And so can even you.
